He’s best known for playing Dr. Sydney Freedman on M*A*S*H, but Allan Arbus was also a photographer whose first wife was legendary photographer Diane Arbus.

Feb. 15, 1918
Allan Arbus is born in New York City.

1941
Allan marries Diane Nemerov (who later becomes famous photographer Diane Arbus).

1940s
Allan becomes a photographer for the U.S. Army and teaches Diane his new photographic skills. The pair later establish a successful fashion photography studio under the billing, “Diane and Allan Arbus”.

1945
Diane gives birth to their first daughter, Doon Arbus.

1951
They close the studio and move to Europe for a year with daughter Doon, who was then 6 years old.

1954
Diane gives birth to their second daughter, Amy Arbus.

1956
Diane dissolves their business partnership and goes to work full time on her own photography.

1959
Allan and Diane separate.

1969
They finally divorce when Allan moves to Los Angeles.

1971
Diane commits suicide.

1972
Allan lands the lead role in Robert Downey Sr.’s film, Greaser’s Palace.

Sept. 29, 1973
Allan makes his first appearance as psychiatrist Maj. Sydney Freedman on M*A*S*H.

1972
He marries Mariclare Costello.

2000
He appears on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It is his last television role.

April 19, 2013
Allan dies of congestive heart failure at the age of 95.
