She’s one of the most successful and talented singers of all time with many record breaking songs and albums. She’s also a notorious diva who makes outrageous demands and always wants the camera angle to be just so. You either love or hate Mariah Carey, but you’ve gotta admit there’s nobody else like her.

March 27, 1970
Mariah Carey is born in Long Island, NY.

Late 1980s
A day after graduating from high school, Mariah moves to New York City to pursue a singing career.

1988
Meets Tommy Mottola at a party and they begin a relationship.

1990
Releases her debut album, Mariah Carey. The singles “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Someday,” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry” all go to #1 on the charts.

She begins behaving strangely in public and there are rumors that she is having a breakdown. She posts suicidal messages on her website, appears on TRL wearing only a t-shirt, and rambles on and on during conversations.

The movie Glitter is released and is so bad that it becomes a joke.

Virgin breaks its contract with Carey and pays her 28 million dollars.

Mariah Carey announces on The Ellen Degeneres Show that she will be taking up residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, performing several shows throughout the year starting in May 2015. She says in a press statement: “I have so many ideas for the show that I’m currently working on and am excited to perform all of my No. 1 singles together for the first time and others that are very close to my heart. My songs are the soundtrack of my life, and I can’t wait to share them with my fans on stage.”
