E. Annie Proulx Timeline

Edna Annie Proulx is born in Norwich, Connecticut. Attends Colby College but does not graduate. Goes back to college, enrolling at the University of Vermont. Graduates from the University of Vermont cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in History. Receives her M.A. from Sir George Williams University in Montreal, Quebec. Her first novel, Postcards, is published. Her second novel, The Shipping News, is published. The Shipping News wins both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Movies to Arvada, Wyoming. In an interview with Planet Jackson Hole she says: "In travels across the country decades ago I recognized Wyoming as my place to write. The long sight lines and landscape that called me to walk and explore it loosened ideas, created images and even sentences and phrases. I would have moved here much earlier than 1995, but I had a responsibility to my mother in New England. Six weeks after she died I came to Wyoming." The New Yorker publishes her short story, "Brokeback Mountain." Wins the O. Henry award for best short story of the year for "Brokeback Mountain." The New Yorker publishes the first half of her short story, "The Mud Below." The New Yorker publishes the second half of her short story, "The Mud Below." Wins the O. Henry award for best short story of the year for "The Mud Below." Publishes a collection of short stories called Close Range: Wyoming Stories. It includes both "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Mud Below." The film version of Brokeback Mountain is released, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Michelle Williams. About seeing it, Proulx tells the Village Voice: "It was marvelous, huge. I'm not sure I can put into words the sensation of seeing something you've written years ago rear up in monstrous size before you." Attends the Academy Awards, where Brokeback Mountain is nominated for eight awards. Writes an essay entitled "Blood on the Red Carpet" for the UK Guardian newspaper lamenting the fact that Brokeback Mountain lost the Best Picture award to Crash, which she refers to jokingly as "Trash."
