McLean Stevenson Timeline

Nov. 14, 1927: Edgar McLean Stevenson, Jr. is born in Normal, Illinois, the grandson of Adlai E. Stevenson, who served as Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897.

1952: Works as press secretary for his cousin, Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson, in the 1952 presidental election.

1956: Works again as press secretary for his cousin, Adlai Stevenson, in the 1956 presidential election.

1962: Makes his stage debut in The Music Man.

1966: Guest stars on the Marlo Thomas tv show, That Girl.

1969: Signs on to a regular role as magazine editor boss Michael Nicholson on The Doris Day Show, which he plays until 1971.

Sept. 17, 1972: The first episode of the tv series, M*A*S*H, airs on CBS, entitled "M*A*S*H the Pilot". Stevenson plays the role of Col. Henry Blake, the lovable but scatterbrained commanding officer.

March 18, 1975: In Stevenson's final M*A*S*H episode, entitled "Abyssinia, Henry," Col. Blake receives a discharge and the crew of the 4077th bid him farewell. At the end of the episode, the camp is informed that Blake's plane has been shot down over the Sea of Japan and that there were no survivors.

Feb. 16, 1996: Stevensen dies from a heart attack. He is buried in Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills.
