Montgomery Clift Timeline
Oct. 17, 1920
Born Edward Montgomery Clift in Omaha, Nebraska to Ethel Fogg and William Brooks Clift. He has a twin sister Roberta and an older brother, Brooks.
1934
He is cast in a summer stock production of
Fly Away Home. He is a success and is asked to appear in the Broadway production as well.
Jan. 1935
The Broadway production of
Fly Away Home opens.
1939
Goes on vacation to Mexico with friend Lehman Engel. During the trip, Clift comes down with amoebic dysentery.
1948
Makes his film debut in
Red River with John Wayne.
1949
Meets
Elizabeth Taylor when the studio forces her to accompany him to the premiere of
The Heiress. The two become lifelong friends.
1951
Stars in
A Place in the Sun with Elizabeth Taylor.
1953
Stars in
From Here to Eternity.
1956
After leaving a part at Taylor's house in Beverly Hills, Clift falls asleep at the wheel and crashes his car into a telephone pole. Taylor is the first on the scene and saves him from choking by pulling two loose teeth from his throat. Clift breaks every bone in his face. Though his face is reconstructed, he never looks the same again.
1957
Raintree County is released, Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. The film was being shot when Clift had his car accident. He finished filming after his face had been reconstructed. People flock to the theater to compare the "before and after" scenes of his face.
1960
Stars in
Wild River.
1966
Dies at the age of 45 of a heart attack resulting from longterm drug and alcohol abuse.
