Apr. 4, 1965: Born as Robert John Elias, Jr. in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NY to Elsie Ford and stepfather, Robert Downey, Sr.

1970: Makes film debut as Puppy in Pound.

1984: Begins dating Sarah Jessica Parker.

1985: Joins the cast of Saturday Night Live for one year.

Aug. 2, 1985: Plays Ian in Weird Science.

Sept. 18, 1987: Plays Jack Jericho in The Pick-Up Artist.

Nov. 6, 1987: Plays the drug addict, Julian Wells, in Less than Zero.

Aug. 10, 1990: Plays Billy Covington Air America, with Mel Gibson.

1991: Stops seeing Sarah Jessica Parker.

Dec. 25, 1992: Plays Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin.

May 29, 1992: Marries Deborah Falconer.

Mar. 29, 1993: Wins an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Chaplin, with Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, David Duchovny, and Milla Jovovich.

Aug. 26, 1994: Plays Wayne Gale in Natural Born Killers, with Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rodney Dangerfield.

June 23, 1996: Pulled over by cops and is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (.357 Magnum revolver), Drug (Mexican Black Tar heroin, crack, cocaine) Possession, and Driving While Intoxicated.

July 16, 1996: Downey casually walks into a Malibu, California home and takes a nap in a child's bed. Is arrested for trespassing. He swears that his limo driver dropped him off at the wrong place.

July, 1996: Ordered to go to the Exodus Recovery Center.

July 20, 1996: Escapes Exodus Recovery Center. Is arrested.

Nov. 6, 1996: Malibu Municipal Judge Lawrence Mira sentences Downey to three years probation for drugs and weapons charges, with this departing message for Downey, "If you've ever had a chance here to deal with this problem and maintain your sobriety, this is the chance to do it. I wish you good luck. You've made a good start."

Nov. 16, 1996: Hosts Saturday Night Live.

Dec. 8, 1997: Violates probation and Malibu Municipal Judge Lawrence Mira gives him six months in jail.

Feb. 14, 1998: While in Corcoran State Prison he gets in a fight, acquiring a scratched nose.

Mar. 6, 1998: Plays Special Agent John Royce in U.S. Marshals, with Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes.

July 16, 1999: Returns to Corcoran State Prison for parole violation, this time getting three years.

Apr. 3, 2000: According to The New York Daily News he is abused by fellow Corcoran State Prison inmates due to his social standing.

Summer, 2000: Due to a court sentencing error made by his trial judge back in July 1999, a California state appellate court orders Downey released.

2000: Becomes a regular on Ally McBeal.

Feb. 22, 2000: Plays Terry Crabtree in Wonder Boys.

Nov. 25, 2000: In Palm Springs, California, he is arrested for cocaine and Valium possession .

Jan. 21, 2001: Gets a Golden Globe for work on Ally McBeal.

Jan. 24, 2001: Deborah Falconer files for divorce.

Apr. 24, 2001: Police find him wandering an alley (under the influence). He is not charged.

Nov. 13, 2003: Plays Pete Graham in Gothika, with Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz.

Apr. 26, 2004: Divorces Deborah Falconer.

Nov. 23, 2004: Releases his debut album The Futurist.

Aug. 26, 2005: Marries Susan Levin.
