Everyone was shocked when River Phoenix died of a drug overdose outside of the Viper Room in 1993. What’s amazing is that, despite his early death, he made so many great films that will be remembered. Here’s our River Phoenix timeline.

Aug. 23, 1970
Born River Jude Bottom in Madras, Oregon to John Lee Bottom and Arlyn Sharon Dunetz. His parents joined the Children of God cult and changed their last name to Phoenix. His siblings are Summer Phoenix, Rain Phoenix, Liberty Butterfly Phoenix, and Joaquin Phoenix.

1986
Stars in the Rob Reiner film, Stand By Me, with Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell. The movie is based on the Stephen King novella, The Body.

Stars in The Mosquito Coast with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

1988
Stars in Little Nikita.

Stars in Running on Empty with Judd Hirsch, Christine Lahti, and Martha Plimpton. Phoenix is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role.

River dies of a drug overdose of heroin and cocaine outside Johnny Depp‘s Viper Room club in Hollywood. His brother Joaquin makes the 911 call.
